Folk art in Metsovo is highly developed and constitutes one of the principal occupations of the inhabitants. Of the various forms of folk art, the most developed are woodcarving and weaving.
The renowned "taliadouroi" set off from Metsovo and traveled around the Balkans in order to manufacture different kinds of woodcuts. This glorious tradition is preserved in Metsovo today by the Metsovian craftsmen, who undertake the construction of iconostases, episcopal seats, pulpits, candle stands, woodcarved ceilings, epitaphs, etc.
Worth noticing is the pastoral woodcarving, namely the art of the shepherds, who carve small items in order to fill in the hours of their loneliness. However, the pastoral woodcarving is not considered as a professional art. Main features of these woodcuts are their small dimensions and the fastidious technique. Shepherds’ crooks, distaffs, spoons, forks and stamps are the main woodcut pieces.
The Metsovian textiles are unique. They are distinguished for the variety, the density in the motifs and the color stability. Metsovo has a long tradition in weaving and some of the most characteristic pieces include the famous rugs, the pillows, the bedding, the hearth rugs, the carpets, the covers, the rugs for the corridors, the longhaired handmade blankets or rugs and other pieces of exceptional art.
Apart from the designs, the vivid clash of the color tones, the cold and hot colors and the combination between colors and design add to the beauty of the Metsovian textiles. The various decorative motifs are created on a uniform background in bright red, dark blue, brown, black and rarely white. The color of the background affects both the color composition of the decorative patterns and their density. Only natural colors are used for the painting of the threads, as they give nice and bright colors and they are not affected by the sunlight and the wash.
Metsovo maintains the tradition of gold thread embroidery, especially by the tailors, who manufacture the Metsovian costumes and the national costumes worn by the dance groups of our country. Other forms of folk art that flourish in Metsovo are the gold- and silversmithery, the woodcraft, which is expressed in the coopery and the manufacturing of beehives.
The various Metsovian folk art pieces are available from the sales-stand of the Tossizza Foundation and at the various folk art shops that are located along the main road that ends up to the main square.
